Mozambique: A campaign against gender-based violence

"Care is protection! Say no to gender-based violence" was the theme of the awareness-raising campaign against gender-based violence held this week in Beira. Organised by the Catholic University of Mozambique (UCM), the campaign seeks to combat various forms of violence and promote human dignity within families.

This awareness-raising campaign against gender-based violence is being run by the Catholic University of Mozambique (UCM), through its Department of Health, Gender and HIV/AIDS.

The event, which took place virtually, was chaired by UCM Rector Professor Filipe Sungo, in the presence of members of the higher education institution's Board of Directors, invited guests and other interested parties. In his presentation, the UCM head explained that the campaign aimed to share experiences and realities of Mozambican society at a time of flagrant violations of human dignity within families.

The campaign comes at a time when the World Health Organization (WHO) is organising parallel events on suicide. According to the Rector of the Catholic University of Mozambique, "victims of violence and abuse sometimes resort to suicide as the only way escape from this evil." He called for "synergies and bridges to be built in order to deal with the barriers against gender-based violence".

UCM units have organised various activities to deconstruct toxic masculinity, which leads to the detriment of the other and is symptomatic of gender-based violence.
