A Catholic observer at the World Evangelical Alliance General Assembly
For the first time, the Catholic Church was invited to send an observer to the General Assembly of the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA). The Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity (PCPCU) was represented by Monsignor Juan Usma Gómez, Head of the Western Section and Catholic Coordinator of the III Series of International Consultations with the WEA. Cardinal Kurt Koch sent a message to the Secretary General of the WEA, Bishop Efraim Tendero, addressed to the participants in the Assembly. The meeting, held in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 7 to 13 November 2019, had as its theme "Your Kingdom come".
800 participants from over 80 countries
Eleven years after the last General Assembly, the participants - 800 of them from over 80 countries - were able to reflect on the challenges of the Church today, especially on the collaboration between Christian leaders from different generations. At the conclusion of the Assembly, the urgency of proclaiming the Gospel was reiterated, in obedience to the missionary mandate; the intention to create National Evangelical Alliances in all countries of the world was communicated; and the initiative "A Decade for Disciple Making 2020-2030" was launched.
