Four workers were killed and three others injured on Friday when a pylon collapsed at the site of a new supermarket that was under construction in the central Italian city of Florence.

Pope Francis sent his condolences to their families on Saturday in a telegram signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.

The Pope’s condolences were sent to Cardinal Giuseppe Betori, the Archbishop of Florence.

Pope Francis asked the Cardinal Archbishop to express his condolences and closeness to the victims’ families, along with his “heartfelt participation in the sorrow of the entire community.”

He also called for heightened vigilance and safety at all workplaces, saying he hopes for “greater commitment from those responsible for protecting workers.”

The Pope wrapped up his message by thanking all involved in rescue efforts and assuring everyone of his prayers.
