Archbishop Xuereb named as Nuncio to Morocco

Pope Francis names Archbishop Alfred Xuereb as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Morocco

Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Alfred Xuereb as Apostolic Nuncio in Morocco. Archbishop Xuereb has been serving as Apostolic Nuncio in Korea and Mongolia.

Biography of Archbishop Alfred Xuereb

Archbishop Alfred Xuereb was born in Gozo (Malta) in 1958.

Ordained a priest in 1984, he began his service in 1991 at the Secretariat of the Rector Magnificus of the Pontifical Lateran University. In 1995, he moved to the Vatican to the Section for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State and after five years, he moved to the Prefecture of the Papal Household.

In 2007 he served as second private secretary of Benedict XVI; and then, in 2013, as first private secretary of Pope Francis. In the same year, the new pope appointed him Delegate for the Pontifical Commission looking into the Institute for Works of Religion (IOR) and for the Pontifical Commission on the organization of the economic-administrative structure of the Holy See. In 2014, Xuereb was appointed Secretary General of the Secretariat for the Economy.

In 2018, he was named nuncio to Korea and Mongolia and elevated to the titular see of Amantea with the dignity of archbishop. In the same year, he received episcopal consecration from Pope Francis.
