From Secretariat of State to Spain: Msgr Serrano named Coadjutor Bishop of Urgell

On Friday, Pope Francis appointed Bishop-elect Josep-Lluís Serrano Pentinat as the new Coadjutor Bishop of Urgell, Spain.
He has served up to now as the special secretary to the Substitute for General Affairs, Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, as well as a Counselor of the Nunciature in the Section for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State.
The news was announced Friday by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, and later communicated by the Holy See Press Office.
Born on March 19, 1977 in Tivissa, Tarragona Province, Diocese of Tortosa, Bishop-elect Serrano studied Philosophy and Theology at the Major Seminary of Tortosa.
He was ordained a priest on April 21, 2002. He has held various positions, including parish priest of La Palma d'Ebre, La Bisbal de Falset, and Margalef de Montsant (2002-2005); Sant Andreu and Sant Pere in Vandellòs-Hospitalet de l'Infant (2007-2009); moderator of the Pastoral Unit of Costa Nord (2008-2009); and lecturer at the Major Seminary (2007-2009).
Bishop elect Serrano earned a licentiate and doctorate in Dogmatic Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome (2007, 2012) and studied at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome (2009-2012). He also obtained a licentiate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Lateran University (2011).
He has also served as secretary of the Nunciature in Mozambique (2012-2016), Nicaragua (2016-2017), and Brazil (2017-2019). Since 2019, he has been a Counselor of the Nunciature in the Section for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State.
