Israel plans settlement expansion after stabbing

The Israeli government has announced it will build hundreds of new homes in a settlement in the occupied West Bank where a Palestinian teenager stabbed three Israelis, one of them fatally.

A 17-year –old teenager scaled the perimeter wall of the settlement on Thursday evening, attacking three people before being shot dead.

The Israeli man who died was named as 30-year-old Yotam Ovadia. A 58-year-old man is stable in hospital, and the third person was treated for light wounds

The attacker was named as Mohammed Dar Youssef from Kobar. Since the attack his family have been questioned by Israeli army investigators, there were reports of some scuffles in Kobar soon after the army arrived. Three people were arrested.

The Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said the ‘best answer to terrorism is the expansion of settlements,” in a Tweet posted on Friday. He announced that 400 new homes would be built in a settlement just north of the capital Jerusalem.

The incident came after a period of calm in the West Bank region.
