Terror bombing kills 63 at wedding in Afghanistan

A suicide bomber killed at least 63 people on Saturday at a wedding ceremony in the Afghan capital, Kabul, with the so-called Islamic State claiming responsibility for the attack.

By Nathan Morley

A suicide bomb attack at a wedding hall in western Kabul has killed at least 63 people.

An Interior Ministry spokesman said that the attacker set off his explosives among male wedding guests.

Over 200 people were injured.

Soon after the explosion, a group affiliated to the so-called Islamic State claimed responsibility for the atrocity.

More than 1,000 people had been invited to the event.

Easy target

Afghan weddings are flamboyant affairs, with hundreds or often thousands of guests celebrating inside large wedding halls.

Similar attacks on Afghan weddings have occurred before; as such gatherings are easy targets for attackers.
