Several factors are driving an exodus of migrants in many parts of the world - spanning from Africa, America and Asia.

Conflict, poverty and climate are just some of the reasons displacing people around the world.

Crossing the Mediterranean

In Europe, the impact of migration is brought into stark focus on Lampedusa, the epicenter cross-Mediterranean irregular migration to the EU.

Last week saw record arrivals from Africa, with about 7,000 migrants coming ashore

The Italian island which sits between Tunisia and Malta has seen arrivals double this year compared with last year, and triple compared with 2021.

The Crossings are fraught with danger. The International Organization for Migration, says nearly 2,000 migrants have lost their lives this year alone while attempting to reach Europe by sea.

One of worst migrant disasters occurred off the coast of Greece when a boat overturned killing hundreds.

Across entire continents to flee war

Europe has experienced the arrival of Ukrainian refugees from the Russia invasion.

In Africa – several migrant crises continue – including in Ethiopia where, because of economic reasons and armed conflict in the northern part of the Horn of Africa, people continue to flee or be displaced.

Over in Sudan, more than 100,000 people have left the country since fighting broke out between rival forces earlier this year.

A reality from Asia to South America

In Asia, thousands of Rohingya have fled from Myanmar in recent years – countless ships have attempted to cross the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal.

And over in Mexico the surge of migrants trekking north mostly from South America has placed increasing pressure on the country.
