US calls for Israel to reduce ‘harm to civilians’

The United States Defence Secretary has said the US has spoken to Israel about making the war in Gaza more "surgical".

Speaking in Tel Aviv, Lloyd Austin repeated Washington’s support for Israel, but discussed reducing harm to civilians, and moving to lower intensity operations.

His comments came just hours after health officials in Gaza said Israeli air strikes killed 110 people in Jabalia.

There's been no detailed comment from Israel, which insists it is targeting what it calls terrorist infrastructure.

In New York, the United Nations Security Council will vote on a motion calling for an urgent and sustainable cessation of hostilities later, after repeated arguing over the wording.

The situation in Gaza top’s the agenda for the British Foreign Secretary David Cameron who is currently visiting France and Italy. He will meet French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, before going to Rome to meet Italy's Foreign Minister.

Hamas broke through Israel's border on 7 October, killing 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages, including women and children. The health ministry in Gaza claims more than 19,400 people have been killed and 52,000 injured in the enclave since the start of the conflict.
