Strike kills Iranian military commanders in Syria

According to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard, Israel is to blame for the attack, which it claimed killed four military advisers as well as Syrian troops, although no figure was given.

The attack took place in southwest Damascus, an area home to a military airport, as well as the United Nations center of operations in the city.

There has been no comment from Jerusalem.

Revolutionary Guard members have been posted in Syria since the civil war began there in 2011, helping to support Bashar al-Assad’s government against the rebellion to his administration.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based monitoring organization, said 10 people were killed in the strikes.

Fears of escalation

Just last week the Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi warned against the risk of the military escalation in the Middle East region on multiple fronts.

Sisi said the vital need was to defuse the current situation through an immediate and urgent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and enforce the delivery of humanitarian aid.

On the ground, bombardments and fighting continue to hamper the distribution of urgent medical and humanitarian supplies in Gaza, including a recent delivery from Qatar.

Israel has been conducting a large-scale offensive in Gaza in response to a surprise Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, when 1,200 people and scores of civilians were taken hostage.
