Pope Francis bids Chile farewell
Pope Francis has departed from Chile ending the first leg of his 22nd apostolic journey abroad. He arrived in the capital, Santiago, on Monday 15 and went on to visit Temuco in the south and Iquique in the north of the country.
The papal plane took off on Thursday evening from the “Diego Aracena” International Airport in the city of Iquique and is heading for Lima, the capital of Peru where he will spend the next three days.
Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet was at the Airport for a brief personal encounter before saying goodbye.
Various Delegations were on the tarmac to see the Pope off and he received the Guard of Honour salute before boarding the plane.
The company flying the Pope to Peru for the second leg of his journey is the national Chilean LATAM airlines. The airbus is scheduled to touch down in Lima after a flight of slightly over two hours.
Pope Francis is the second Pope to visited the nation. Saint Pope John Paul II travelled to Chile 30 years ago, in April 1987.
