Mexico shaken by strong quake
By James Blears
Mexico is still experiencing aftershocks following a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that shook Mexico City — but mercifully did not kill anyone.
That giddy wobbling sensation when the floor and walls seem to ripple… and then, almost exactly one hour later another earthquake. The tremors originated in the southwestern state of Oaxaca. Mexican Minister of the Interior Alfonso Navarrette confirmed some superficial damage to buildings there, but no deaths.
In the capitol, Mexico City, buildings swayed for more than a minute, prompting thousands of office workers to exit on the sidewalks. Most went home after the temblor, rather than returning to work.
On September 8th and 19th last year, earthquakes killed hundreds and caused widespread damage. Friday’s earthquake has produced dozens of aftershocks, and much trepidation.
