Covid-19: US cases surpass 2 million

The United States has surged past the grim milestone of 2 million Covid-19 cases. Data from the US based Johns Hopkins University shows that the country’s death toll has climbed to nearly 113,000. It already has the most coronavirus cases in the world.

According to experts, part of this rise is a result of more testing for the disease. But recent increases are also likely as a result of more movement.

The nation’s 50 states are gradually re-opening for business, and another spike in cases could appear in the next few weeks following nationwide protests after the death of African American George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police.

Latin America

Latin America too is another hotspot for the virus. On Wednesday, Mexico hit a daily record for confirmed infections. The country’s health ministry confirmed 4,883 cases and 708 fatalities.

Brazil, remains Latin America's most hard hit country with nearly 40,000 deaths.

Although cases of Covid-19 continue to fall in many parts of Europe, Russia on Thursday reported 8,779 new cases of the diseases, bringing its infection count to 502,436.

Africa

As the virus continues to spread, there is growing concern that the number of infections in Africa is still climbing. According to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cases on the continent have surpassed 200 thousand.

South Africa has the highest number of cases registered at nearly 53,000, while Egypt and Nigeria also have a significant number of infections.

At a global level the number of cases stands at over 7.3 million, while deaths worldwide have now surged to at least 416,000.
